Vilachery, Madurai district

Madurai, is a treasure trove of intangible heritage that offers a profound glimpse into traditional Indian life. Vilachery is famous for its intangible heritage of dolls making and pottery. The stone inscription of Nayak period (16th Century) which was erected near the Nilaiyur channel Inscription mentioned about the right of irrigation to the agriculturist of Thiruparankundram area through this channel. 16th Century Sivan and Vishnu Temple Tamil Poet “Paruthimar Kalaignar” born in this village and there is a memorial house for him. He is the responsible for declaring tamizh as Heritage Language(Semmozhi) Terracotta Horses making for the Ayyanar Temples in the surroundings.
